Welcome back to the dress diaries. Previous posts in this dress diary: The prelude Part I Part II Part III - Mock-up three, or: how canvas really does stretch Part IV - Sidetracking with academic cleavage. Part V - Bodys' wear and tear Part VI - My first venture with dupioni silk; Part VII - Of boning and binding; Part VIII - Loads of obsolete handsewing; Part IX - The final chapter. (That's this post!)
Last Monday I posted what I had hoped would have been the last chapter of the dress, but since editing pictures until after midnight is not my forte, I chose to post about the last bits of the dress, and the last bits of the accessoiries in one go. So here it is: the final chapter for this dress diary, Part IX, the finished product.
Before I dive into the pictures, here's some statistics: The entire project took a little over six months, but I wasn't sewing continuously on the project. I made three mock-ups for the bodys and one for the dress. I took more than 300 pictures during the process, of which 88 have been published in these dress diaries through Flickr. I received 124 comments on the ten previous posts in my personal journal, including those on the prelude and my replies to other people's comments, but not counting comments on my entries about this project in the advanced_sewing community or in the dressdiaries community (for which I am really grateful... you guys were so cool!)
( It was all worth it... )
It's sure been one heck of a ride, and I learned so much! I hope you all enjoyed this dress diary, because I loved posting my progress here and receiving your comments. Thanks all!

I had been hording some wool I had gotten a really good price on to make the Unicorn dress based on the Raphael painting, after having the wool sit on my shelf for the better part of 3 years I decided if I didn't make it soon it would keep sitting there and be a "one of those days" project. I started with one of the diagrams from Alcega and somewhere along the lines misread some of the diagram and ended up with a not very full skirt. (I need to still go over it again and see if it really was a mistake on my part or if that really was the final width.) So with the fabric I had left I ended up with large rectangular panels with a small gore. I tried knife pleating but the fabric was too much and too thick, so in the end I gathered it to the bodice. In another grand brain fart, somewhere between knife pleating and basting that to the bodice and then taking it back off I forgot to turn under the lining to the fashion fabric at the top of the skirt. I didn't realize it till after I had sewn it down that in places where I had overlocked the wool you could see the white thread on the right side. >.< If this was a project for someone else I would have un-picked all of it and fixed the lining and sewn it back on. But instead I took the right side edge of the bodice and sewed it down to the front of the skirt by hand with tiny tiny whip stitches. Now all I have left is the trim and sleeves.

*edit* I just realized I laced it all weird for the photos and that I need to fix one eyelet to look a bit more like all the others. I wish eyelet plates fit other brands of sewing machines.

I tried making a little cap for E. It looked great in fleece as a mockup, but it looks like ass in velvet. Puckery, uneven, too-small ASS.
I wonder if I should bother with trying again or just ditch the damn thing and move on to something else. :/ |

Still sick with The Coughing, to the point that I'm not going to the fabulous burlesque night tonight. So, so vexed, but I also want to get well.
My freelance client is happy; I gave my LOL a flash drive for Christmas; I worked out a plan for Life Infrastructure Upgrades for the next several months. After all this practicality I would really enjoy watching pretty ladies take clothes off tantalizingly. Maybe somebody else can go, and tell me about it, because it really is going to be great. |

Mediteranian inspired.. thing
I suppose it could be called a bake or grill or something.
Into one pot put: 1 can drained chickpeas (or equivalent of soaked dried) 1 1/2 cans diced tomatoes in juice 1T or a squirt tomato sauce 1T or a splash of Worstershire sauce 1T or a splash of Korean bulgogi sauce
And set on high.
Over the top steam some chopped cabbage. I used about 1/4 head of savoy.
Once the cabbage has softened add it to the pot and add 1 ribboned or sliced courgette 2 medium carrots sliced
stir and allow to start to boil.
Over the top steam a head of spinach, preferally ripped into smallish pieces.
While that is wilting thick slice three capsicum and put into a tray with some olive oil and marinated garlic. Grill until capsicums are soft and preferably a bit charred. Mine didn't quite get charred.
Put the wilted spinach in a pan and dry fry with some dried garlic and a sprinkle of Aromat.
Finally if the chickpea stew is not thick add some flour and stir and then spread in the bottom of a heat proof dish.
Layer the spinach over it.
Layer the garlic and capsicum over that.
Grate some cheese I think I wound up grating a 1cm thick slice from the block and spread over the dish.
Take half an avocado and slice or dice or otherwise remove the filling and top the dish.
Set under the grill until the cheese is melted and starting to go golden where it touches the dish.
Serve and nom.
I see button mushrooms doing well in this as well.

Welcome back to the dress diaries. Previous posts in this dress diary: The prelude; Part I; Part II; Part III; Part IV; Part V; Part VI; Part VII;
Today I come bearing pictures of the nearly finished dress... and to tell you a tale of woe. I had anticipated my weekend would be devoured by sewing on this dress, and I was right. However, I couldn't have guessed at the amount of sewing that was completely obsolete.( Wasted time and many pictures below. )
And this is where I fear I must leave you. It wasn't my intention to have a cliffhanger, but when I was still editing pictures at a quarter to midnight last night I realised my alarm was set for six-thirty am, and I stopped. You'll have to wait to see what happens next!

| The Singularity Wants Us To Be Well Groomed | Dec. 7th, 2009 @ 08:52 pm |

On Saturday, I took my LOL out for afternoon tea on her birthday, and got to see her and Tyger interacting. Tyger jumps on her lap, reconciles himself to being slid down by her side, and goes flumpf with perfect contentment. The LOL has definitely perked up after having an affectionate beast following her adoringly for a week.
I've been fluttering through the various stages of unwellness with a Throat Thing over the past three days. Why do I always get sick in the summer? edm had to deal with me coughing periodically as we watched Flame and Citron, a WWII movie that reminded me somewhat of The Night Porter.
One advantage that clothes in thrift and consignment stores have is that somebody already thought they were worth buying once. That may be why, this season, I've been having much better luck thrifting than buying new clothes. The sewing I've been doing has been to take up hems and turn an A-line skirt into a pencil skirt.
Over the past month, the Internet told me how to hem my jeans, get my capris at the right height like clamdiggers, have painful high heels shortened, and give myself a decent pedicure. And it all works. I feel like this is an Internet bellwether of some kind, even though it's definitely a few IQ points short of The Singularity. Perhaps the coming artificial intelligences are deeply offended by unflattering capri pant lengths.
I may be wrong about 2010 being the end of the decade, but I'm starting to have company.
Time for some tea and a hot bath. |

Okay, or maybe I just need to make a little jacket or something to wear with the veryverychristmassy 1867 dress so it just feels a little more appropriate for a month other than december. That would be more sane than starting something from scratch, right? |

I have decided the artist was on crack.
There is now way the gown works as it is depicted. http://www.bildindex.de/bilder/koeln_ar01007b.jpg Köln, Bildnis einer Frau, um 1555/1560, Bild, Köln, Wallraf-Richartz-Museum
Spotted it yet? Not the weird v at the neck that make sit look like the brustfleck is sitting over the top and has a pointed bottom. Though that too. Not the weird additional skirt guard on our right (the one on the left can be explained as the underwrap skirt front) as that could be explained as being like the Anne of Cleves other portrait guard weirdness.
No it's the mismatch of the sleeve on our right. See the big white curve of the lining? See where it hits the wrist? See how it in no way matches up with the sleeve on the top side of her wrist?
I suspect this was actually by an artist from another region, probably the Netherlands/Flanders as the undersleeves are also very much that of further west into the Netherlands. The opening underneath with ties to puff the chemise through I mean.
The oversleeves also look way too much like the artist was using turn back sleeves to work from. Maybe thinging the lining (which wraps to the top creating a narrow border) was another sleeve and the darker reddich pink velvet was a turnback.
I think there has been some retouching as well. Her Sticksell is too wingnutty but there is a shadow that follows a smoother line down from the crown over the wingnuts.
So I am using the maroon silk as it reminds me a lot of this dress: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bartholom%C3%A4us_Bruyn_d._%C3%84._004.jpg
